A Brief Overview of Mechanical Engineers (233512)

Mechanical engineers research, design, organise, and oversee the manufacturing, operation, installation, and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment. In Australia, they are vital to sectors like manufacturing, mining, building services, defence, and energy. Mechanical Engineers apply principles of mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, and structural analysis to design everything from individual micro-sensors to large-scale power plants and machinery. They ensure that systems function safely, efficiently, reliably, and cost-effectively, while adhering to strict Australian Standards, building codes, and safety regulations.

As a foundational engineering discipline, Mechanical Engineer (ANZSCO 233512) is a key occupation in Australia’s General Skilled Migration (GSM) program, with a high demand for skilled mechanical engineers and professionals to drive innovation and support industrial infrastructure.

Mechanical Engineers Career Episode Report Samples

The career episodes (CEs) must be written in English and your own words based on your recent work experience in the mechanical engineering field. Each CE should highlight your challenges and how you addressed them. Paragraphs should be numbered systematically (e.g., Career Episode 1, paragraphs 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.).

This project was undertaken during my professional role as a Design Engineer. My key responsibilities included:

  • Gathering client needs to define the system’s operational parameters, including load capacity, speed, and spatial constraints.
  • Developing 3D models and assembly drawings for the conveyor system using SolidWorks, including structural frames, drive mechanisms, and safety guarding.
  • Performing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using ANSYS to validate the structural integrity of critical components under operational and peak loads.
  • Selecting appropriate materials and standard mechanical components (bearings, motors, gearboxes) based on performance calculations and supplier specifications.
  • Producing a full set of manufacturing drawings in compliance with AS 1100 (Technical Drawing) standards.
  • Collaborating with the manufacturing team to resolve fabrication issues and ensure the final product met design intent.
  • Skills & Technologies Demonstrated:
    • Software: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, ANSYS, MATLAB
    • Australian Standards: AS 1100 (Technical Drawing), AS 4024 (Safety of machinery)
    • Competencies: Mechanical Design, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Material Selection, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Regulatory Compliance.

This project was carried out in my professional capacity as a Mechanical (HVAC) Engineer. My responsibilities included:

  • Performing the entire building’s heating and cooling load calculations by using industry-standard software (e.g., CAMEL).
  • Designing the central plant layout, including the selection and sizing of chillers, boilers, pumps, and air handling units (AHUs).
  • Designing the air distribution network (ductwork) and hydronic systems (piping) using Revit MEP to ensure proper airflow and thermal comfort.
  • Ensuring the HVAC system design complied with the National Construction Code (NCC), AS 1668, and ASHRAE standards for energy efficiency and ventilation.
  • Coordinating with architects, structural engineers, and electrical engineers to resolve clashes and integrate the HVAC system into the overall building design.
  • Reviewing contractor submittals and overseeing the testing and commissioning phase of the project.
  • Skills & Technologies Demonstrated:
    • Software: Revit MEP, AutoCAD, CAMEL (or similar load calculation software)
    • Standards & Frameworks: AS 1668 (The use of ventilation and air-conditioning in buildings), National Construction Code (NCC) / Building Code of Australia (BCA), ASHRAE Standards
    • Competencies: HVAC System Design, Thermodynamic Analysis, Energy Modelling, Building Services Coordination, Regulatory & Code Compliance, Project Commissioning.

This project was undertaken in my role as a Project/Reliability Engineer. My responsibilities included:

  • Developing the project scope, budget, and schedule for the replacement of an aging critical pump system in a processing plant.
  • Managing the procurement process, including writing technical specifications for new pumps and evaluating supplier tenders.
  • Supervising the on-site mechanical installation, including alignment, pipework modifications, and integration with existing control systems.
  • Implementing and enforcing site-specific safety procedures, including Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) and risk assessments, in line with OH&S regulations.
  • Developing a Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) strategy for the new pump system to optimise performance and minimise downtime.
  • Conducting root cause analysis (RCA) on premature failures of ancillary equipment and implementing corrective actions. See more of our case studies to understand our process.
  • Skills & Technologies Demonstrated:
    • Software: Microsoft Project, SAP (Plant Maintenance Module), Aconex
    • Standards & Frameworks: PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge), ISO 9001 (Quality Management), AS/NZS ISO 45001 (OH&S), Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) principles
    • Competencies: Project Management Lifecycle, Asset Management, Maintenance Strategy, Budget & Procurement Management, Contract Administration, Site Safety (OH&S) Management, Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
