A Guide To ACS Skills Assessment For IT Professionals

If you are preparing your online skills application for the new ACS assessment, here is a guide for you. We have compiled all the necessary information related to the general skills assessment pathway for ACS migration. Read to know the ins and outs of the process.

What Is The ACS Migration Skills Assessment?

ACS Migration Skills Assessment is a critical requirement for ICT (information and communication technology) professionals migrating to Australia.

This is a part of the formal assessment needs, carried out by an authorised organisation, the Australian Computer Society, or ACS, on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs.

The ACS assessor will review the skills and qualifications of applicants as per the ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard) code.

The goal is to assess whether the applicants align with the appropriate skill level related to the nominated occupation.

Individuals who complete an ACS Migration Skills Assessment for Australia receive a complimentary 12-month ACS membership.

Who Requires ACS ICT Skill Assessment?

If you fall into one of the following categories, you must complete the ACS Skills Assessment:

ICT Professionals

The positive ACS assessment is compulsory for IT, Data Science, or Cyber Security professionals migrating to Australia. It is also required for General Skilled Migration visas (Subclass 189 and 190) and employer-sponsored visas (Subclass 186). Candidates of State Nomination Programs, under Subclass 190 and 491 visas, will require a valid ACS skills assessment.

International Graduates

If you are an international student who has completed an ICT qualification in Australia and are applying for permanent residency, you must complete the ACS assessment. It also allows you to apply for a Temporary Graduate 485 visa under the Post-Vocational Education Work Stream. This is for international students who completed an Australian diploma or an associate ICT degree, or those who need to claim immigration points for work or study internationally (Australian or overseas).

Non-IT Background Professionals

Skill assessment is required for those willing to apply for the ACS migration but do not hold a degree in an ICT qualification. ACS offers an opportunity to meet the ICT assessment criteria for applicants under the RPL assessment pathway. When applying for a visa, ACS requires the applicants to submit an RPL (recognition of prior learning) Report for the partner’s skills assessment to be completed.

The eligibility criteria depend on the assessment pathway you choose. There are four different pathways for ACS Skills Assessment.

  • General Skills Assessment Pathway – Bachelor’s degree or higher (ICT Major) with at least 33% ICT content for Bachelor’s, or 50% for postgraduate qualifications. For the ICT Minor, at least two-thirds of the ICT Major content. For Closely Related, at least 65% of the ICT content must be closely related to the nominated occupation.
  • Post-Australian Study Skills Assessment- Australian Bachelor’s degree or higher with a major in ICT (relevant to the nominated occupation of the ANZSCO code).
  • Temporary Graduate 485 Pathway- Australian diploma or an associate ICT degree in Australia.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Pathway- Informal ICT qualifications, but with significant ICT work experience presented in the RPL report.

Regardless of the application pathway you choose, at the time of assessment, the ACS will review the following:

  1. Are the mentioned ICT units considered closely related to the ANZSCO code?
  2. Whether your working experience is closely related to your nominated ICT profession.
  3. Does the candidate’s skills list relate to the suitability of the ACS migration job profile?

The assessment will also note whether the educational qualifications align with Australian national education standards using Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) comparability.

This assessment outcome will indicate whether your qualification is classified as a Major, Minor, or contains insufficient ICT content.

The qualification requirements for skilled migration include-

RequirementsDetails
AgeMust be under 45 years old for migration purposes.
English Language ProficiencyRequired for migration (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic)

  2. RPL pathway- 6 years of relevant work experience is needed.
  3. General Skills Assessment- Varies by qualification/major (2-6 years)
  4. Temporary Graduate 485- Not Required.
Professional Level EmploymentWork experience must be at a professional ICT level and at least 20 hours per week.
Points TestFor migration, you must score at least 65 points, factoring in age, English proficiency, qualifications, and work experience.
Australian Study RequirementYou must also meet the ASR for visa purposes, though ACS cannot assess this.

Please note that the ACS cannot advise or provide pre-assessment requirements; eligibility is determined only after a full assessment.

These ACS Skills Assessment Documents will be considered in the application review.

Document TypeDetails
PersonalPassport (bio-data page), birth certificate, Evidence of name change (if applicable), resume/CV
QualificationsDegree certificates, academic transcripts, professional/vocational certificates (with subject names and grades)
Work ExperienceEmployment reference letters, payslips, tax records, and statutory declarations, Resume/CV
OtherEnglish test results, RPL Form (if applying via RPL pathway), professional registration, photographs, Migration agent authorisation (if applicable) form.

ACS provides a detailed guideline for the skills assessment you must adhere to when submitting your online skills application. Here are some of the key highlights:

  1. All applications must be submitted through the official ACS Migration Skills Assessment portal.
  2. All relevant ACS Skills Assessment Documents must be uploaded at the time of submission. Incomplete applications or missing documents can lead to delays or assessment refusal.
  3. Use high-quality colour scans of original documents at a minimum of 300 dpi.
  4. Combine all pages for each qualification or employment entry into a single PDF (a maximum of 3MB per PDF).
  5. Ensure ACS Skills Assessment Documents are not encrypted or in read-only mode.
  6. Non-English documents must be accompanied by NAAT-certified English translations. Overseas translations must be on official letterhead, stamped, and include translator details.
  7. The chosen occupation must appear on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
  8. For work experience requirements, ACS considers the 10 years preceding your online skills application.
  9. Applicants must adhere to the ACS Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. Any document fraud, plagiarism, or misrepresentation will result in an unsuitable outcome, a possible 12-month ban, and no refund.
  10. ACS may verify claims and share information with Australian authorities to maintain integrity.
  11. No renewals are allowed. Applicants must submit a new application for reassessment.
  12. Priority requests are allowed only for online skills application submissions dated with visa deadlines less than 12 weeks away (require supporting evidence).

You must select the correct ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) code in your application at the time of submission. As of 2025, you can nominate up to three ANZSCO codes in a single application, paying a single fixed fee. Each code will be assessed independently, and you will receive separate outcomes for each. The relevance of your degree/major and the nature of your work experience are critical for a positive outcome.

In 2025, the ACS made its process quicker and clearer. Most ACS Skills Assessments take about 8 to 12 weeks after you submit your application. Some pathways, like the Post-Australian Study Assessment, may be processed faster, around 2 to 4 weeks. Factors that can affect how long it takes:

  • Missing documents: If your application isn’t complete, it can delay the process.
  • High number of applications: During busy times, it might take longer.
  • Unusual cases: If your qualifications or experience are hard to verify, it could take more time.
  • Special job rules: Some occupations may need extra checks, which can add to the wait.

To write a successful ACS RPL report, thoroughly follow ACS guidelines, select two relevant projects aligned with your ANZSCO code, clearly demonstrate your ICT skills and knowledge, provide specific evidence, and ensure originality and clarity throughout. Carefully proofread your report and adhere to all formatting and submission requirements. For expert guidance and a higher chance of approval, hire professional writers from TheCDRWriter.

ACS RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) is for applicants without formal ICT qualifications but with significant ICT work experience. Regular ACS Skills Assessment is for those with recognised ICT qualifications, where the assessment focuses on the relevance and level of the qualification and work experience.

Yes, the ACS skills assessment does expire.

The ACS skills assessment is valid for two years (24 months) from the date of issue.

Yes, ACS generally deducts two years from your total relevant work experience when assessing for migration purposes. This accounts for the training and development period after graduation. It mainly applies to applicants with relevant ICT qualifications. The deduction ensures your experience is measured fairly. It helps match your skills to Australian professional standards and the level expected from local ICT graduates.

You can request priority (fast-track) processing if your Australian visa deadline is less than 12 weeks away by providing evidence such as visa expiry details.

You can track your ACS application status by logging into your ACS dashboard through the online portal.

ACS verifies employment through detailed reference letters, supporting documents (such as payslips or tax records), and may contact employers directly for verification.

IELTS or other English tests are not mandatory for the ACS skills assessment itself, but are required for migration purposes by the Department of Home Affairs.

Yes, you can appoint a registered Migration Agent (MARA) to submit your ACS application for you. To do this, you must complete the Migration Agent Authorisation Form (Form 956) and provide a copy of your passport. Only registered migration agents (with OMARA), Australian legal practitioners, or exempt persons like close family members, sponsors, or public officials are allowed to act as your agent.
